The love of ancient history, color and patterns have followed me throughout my life and my designs have come to fruition during the time my family and I lived in Italy. In looking back, beads have always been a part of my life – from playing with Mardi Gras beads or collecting semi-precious stones as a young girl to my love of ancient and ethnic jewelry as I became older. Today seed beads have become the medium I use to translate my sources of inspiration into personal designs for adornment.

When living in Naples, Italy, I was surrounded by ancient history. The fragments of Roman columns, mosaics and frescoes are my inspiration and I am grateful for those “ancient voices”. Translating these voices into designs fills my days with joy and wonder and I cherish my “connection” with the past. Teaching and beading are ways for me to share this wonderful experience and bring those voices of the past into the present.

My Damaraland Bracelet is to be featured in the new
BeadWork Magazine. I absolutely loved making this
bracelet.
Perhaps I have a streak of Mr Monk in me, things
must be in a line and geometric designs and cylinder
beads that fit nicely into one another, brings out the
nice in me. I feel happy and content when I touch

I created the Sarita Necklace before my Dad passed away in 2007 and named it Sarita (Sas - my Dad) and Rita (my Mom). My Dad was so proud to have it named after him and my Mom. The two people, besides my dear husband, that supported me in every venture throughout my life. I so wish he could see this project published - to you Daddy! Heather Collin,Me and Gerlinde Fromont - at the Craft Show - we signed a lot of books today... and we enjoyed it. I am sure we'll do this again! Thanks to all the ladies and gentlemen who bought the book today, and the positive feedback. Much appreciated by us. Thanks to Michelle, her mom and Lisa, who worked so hard behind the scenes and today at the show too. Thanks to our dear friends that came to support us. And dear Dawn - thank you for the muffin, I needed it. On our way back home, we missed the turn-off to the free way, and had to manage our way through Johannesburg - where soccer fever were very high, but we made it safely back.

Must tell you something interesting that we also saw - a traditional beader that wore her beautiful traditional jewellery, even her clothing were traditional - adorned with beads - all made with the Pondo stitch - and believe it or not - the tubular bracelet that we admired had animal skin inside to keep the round shape in tact.She also bought the book!Well, enough said for today - I am so tired, but so happy.

Advance Bead Clutter

I call this Advance Bead Clutter. My lounge was turned into my bead studio, because we are experiencing an extreme chilly winter(my studio is made for sunny days)But it did not help, as I had to run to the studio(every ten minutes) to get more beads, then crystals, then a different colour thread, blah blah. At least I did some exercise with my legs too.Perhaps I mentioned it previously but three of us bead craze girls are doing a book with Michelle(BeadBook) - the book is called Advanced Beading. Well, this weekend we received the feedback from the readers who tested it - and had to do some touch ups and touch downs on the patterns, and I decided to quickly?? test and remake ALL four my projects , just to be extra sure nothing had been left out. Eureka, I am done. Now, ready for the next book.

Later this year, we - that is my friend Barbara of Twines and Beads, Heather and Gerlinde - the two ladies that did a book with me for Michelle of the BeadBook, are going to visit our friend Cynthia in Namibia. Barbara needed my project urgently, as I am on my way to Nelspruit, well .... no inspiration at first and then it came in floods. This design had been inspired by one of my Master The Peyote Stitch classes. It is sometimes difficult to stay that one step ahead of
the students. I used 11/0 Treasures and Delicas to create the ancient looking pendant and necklace. The clasp is very interesting. A hollow embellished (beaded bead) and a pearl. This is a friction fit clasp. Didn't think anything else would suit this style

I only completed one Ribbon Sparkler (Paula Adams) but if I could spare a day or two in my schedule, I would try to complete one more for this year.

This year I designed and wrote instructions for Christmas Deco-
rations for The BeadBook (two editions) and one for the Craftwise and
completed a set of three ornaments for Barbara from Twines and Beads. So my festive spirit started early this year and now I am going to cross stitch Father Xmas Teddy Bears on Plastic canvas. Which I must admit I started in 2000, I completed two teddies, which hang from the tree every year - very lonely.
If they are lucky, this year they will be three teddies...

Purple Craze

Believe it or not, this started out as a raw bracelet and ended
up as the necklace shown. I do not know what is going on in my
creative side - never satisfied with the pattern. Combination of RAW and peyote and unknown new stitches.
But I love the Rivoli's and it is not only because they are Purple.

Eva Keiser is one of the beader's that I really admire, and although I have not used the St Petersburg chain before, it was actually fun to make. (Bead and Button). Toho 1.5mm cubes, fire polished beads and cylinder beads were used in this porject.

I had not been too lazy the past week or two. I taught classes for 5 days this past week .Here are 4 projects I finished and I even wrote a few new patterns, no photo's yet.
I taught a Russian Leaf workshop which the girls loved - the inspiration for the class came from the wonderful work of the Russian Bead Masters. I had to do a lot of research and I found a lot of new ideas and creative designs to use the diagonal weave with. Must admit, I love the workshops on a specific technique, the next one is in August on Beaded Beads. Thanks to all the creative people who share their work so readily with us.

Seed beads?Why why why?

Marcia De Coster asked us to explain why we love seed beads. The questions of eye sight, how long and my patience are well known to me. I taught my Master Peyote II Group yesterday and it was the ideal time to ask all the bead lovers why they prefer seeds. Pat said she loves to touch them and to just look at them, Barbara agreed and admitted the buys them, just to have them all, and me, well ,you all know my bead stash. Should I say anymore. I love that little objects so much, that I'd rather wear old clothing than be without the latest colours of seed beads. But most important of all, is what we can create with an ordinary little glass bead, a needle and a piece of thread. My creativity blooms when I have it between my fingers - and I can do it anywhere, you just need a bead tray and you can be arty and crafty. It is also a wonderful way to relief stress - most of the girls in my classes have very stressful day jobs. Throughout the years I have travelled the world and have met a lot of new friends - all because of a tiny seed bead. The photos show some of the work done by my students - most of them are today very good teachers themselves, bringing joy to others by means of a seed bead. Yesterday we also discussed the fact that we think beading releases something in your brain, that forces you to stay loyal for a lifetime. Believe it or not - even my Char is now beading - staying in during the afternoons to bead. The best is that I laugh a lot more, because I hear the best jokes in Gauteng!Thanks girls I love you all!!

Alberta Pendant

The Alberta Pendant started out as something completely different. I bought a pattern on the internet, but my French had let me down this time. I am just to ashamed to mention the original designer here - her work is outstanding! When I realized that I am -what we in Afrikaans say busy to- "gorrel tjorrel" -that means that I did not know what I had been doing and had been making up my own instructions - because between the illustrations and the French instructions something went wrong and my pendant was strange-looking and did not resemble the awesome design it was intended to be. Well, as my pupils by now know - my motto had always been that you do not make a mistake, you only create a new design. See girls, I sometimes do practise what I preach. Now, to go as sit down and to put it on paper for you.

The Grumpy Secretary

Lulu Bootha, my unofficial secretary, had been ill this week. Very grumpy and fussy, but this morning she is much better. She is actually my son's dog, but adopted me as her one and only mother.

She is a Bull Terrier and is very lovable. Lulu can't be in my office with clients or pupils, she dislikes it when they sit on my chairs or even want to have a conversation with me, so she sits outside and pray to doggy heaven, that the people should leave mommy's office as soon as possible, so that she can come inside and sit on the chair. Very inquisitive and the reason why I had been on my hands and knees more often than not, when she pushed my bead tray off my desk. And, as you beading fanatics will understand, the expensive beads will have to be picked up.

Russian Lady

Years ago, I bought these ceramic faces (very expensive) for another craft project. I just began beading and came back from America with a bag full of delica's and was inspired to create my Russian Lady brooch. Peyote stitch with increases. She is still admired by everyone visiting me, that little smile never changes.

On Saturday, Barbara and the girls from Twines and Beads in

Boksburg, came for a class. Well, for the overseas girls - I live in Randfontein, on the West Rand, and they came from the East Rand, and Johannesburg is in the middle. It is quite a distance apart, for me, anyhow. When Barbara left, look what stayed behind. The (eye) Bead Candy, she is the wholesale importer of TOHO beads,in South Africa. I'll act as a "satellite bead shop" for Barbara. I teach mostly from home, and this will help my pupils to have access to quality beads. The only problem I had after they left, is that I could not bead a stitch, nothing at all, no inspiration. Because how to design a project with all the correct sizes and colours,I need, in front of me. I usually use what I have in my stash. That is why I use the odd colour or size bead - had nothing else available. Have some sympathy please!

The Leafy

We experienced 4 days of rain and wind. Winter is not my favourite season at all. I had a class yesterday and our hands and feet were numb. Today the sun is shining and it is much warmer.
The leaves became earrings. I am busy beading a few more to complete either a bracelet or a necklace, it depends on how inspired I'll be once all the leaves are finished. This weekend I am teaching and I am looking forward to see my friends from Twines and Beads.

Leaves with a difference ! This evolved as I was doing my tutorials for the Master the Peyote Stitch Classes. Watch this space, as I am not at all done with this pattern yet! There are a lot more ideas to implement on the leaves. As it is so cold today, I might just start today and surprise myself.

Rani's Cross

I love crosses and as I do not like to wear a lot of jewellery - this is so easy to just hang around my neck. The girls that come to classes know that I made Marcia De Coster's cross and wear it constantly , now I can wear it every third day as I designed two (one small and one large) crosses. I started with this lovely bracelet pattern from Framboise and after I finished the first set, the beads were finito! Now, for me to order this colour takes 10 days from order to delivery. And I am very impatient to finish this project, so watch out - there is going to be a new twist on this design.

I taught at Jazzi Beads, in Margate, earlier this year and made this bracelet one evening, while listening to the calming sounds of the ocean outside. You were a wonderful group of ladies and my hosts, Jenny and Diane spoiled me so much. I miss the South Coast,girls!
Right Angle Weave circles , 4mm crystals and size 11 seed beads, 3mm glass pearls and size 15 seeds used to embellish.

I used size 11 Delicas, size 15 Miyuki's and size 11 colour lined Miyuki's. I used Peyote stitch variations and viola! Because my time is limited I only added 3 flowers, but you can create a whole bouquet of flowers and leaves

Latie Bracelet - well I don't know exactly when it began, but I had pupils asking me for specific designs, and then I named the designs after them. There had been the Renate bracelet and the Adele necklace etc. Now I'm on family names. This one is for my Mum's sister - my second mother.

This bracelet is a combination of stitches and adorned with embellishments. I'll teach it in June. As from today I am going to try to be a good girl and post at least once a week.

The Sujana bracelet I made because I am very lazy, don't like clasps. So I designed a bracelet using herringbone stitch and embellishments to fit nice and tight around the wrist (this is one all our ladies like - one size fits all!)

Sizes 8, 11 and 15 seed beads with pearls and Swaroski bi cones.
